Behavior Evaluation Scale-Third Edition: Short (BES-3:S)
Stephen B. McCarney, Ed.D. & Tamara J. Arthaud, Ph.D.

Behavior Evaluation Scale-Third Edition: Short (BES-3:S) (03550)

The Behavior Evaluation Scale - Third Edition provides results that assist school personnel in making decisions about eligibility, placement, and programming for students with behavior problems who have been referred for evaluation. The scale yields relevant behavioral information about students regardless of handicapping conditions, and therefore may be used with students who have learning disabilities, mental retardation, physical impairments, and other handicapping conditions.

The BES-3 is based on the IDEA definition of emotional disturbance/ behavioral disorders which makes it particularly useful in the assessment of students who are suspected of having behavior disorders. The BES-3 was factor analyzed to create the following factor clusters (subscales): Learning Problems, Interpersonal Difficulties, Inappropriate Behavior, Unhappiness/Depression, and Physical Symptoms/Fears.

● The BES-3 School Version was standardized on a total of 5,124 students ages 4 through 19 years old.
● The BES-3 Home Version was standardized on a total of 4,643 students ages 4 through 19 years old.
● The standardization population included students from 29 states, represented all geographic regions of the United States, and closely approximated the 2000 demographic characteristics of the United States.
● The BES-3 provides norms based on age and grade for males and females (K-12).
● Internal consistency, item and factor analysis, standard errors or measurement, and test-retest reliability are reported.
● Content, criterion-related, concurrent, and construct validity are reported.
The BES-3:S SV can be completed in approximately 15 minutes and includes 54 items easily observed and documented by educational personnel.
● The BES-3:S HV can be completed by a parent/guardian in approximately 15 minutes and includes 52 items representing behaviors exhibited in and around the home environment.
● The Behavior Evaluation Scale: Short Pre-Referral Checklist provides a means of calling attention to the behavior for the purpose of early intervention before formal assessment of the student.
● The BES:S Intervention Manual (© 2005) includes IEP goals, objectives, and interventions for all 54 items on the School Version of the scale. The manual was designed to serve as a guide for program development for any student in need of behavior improvement.
● The Intervention Strategies Documentation Form provides a written record to place in the student’s file, documenting problem areas and interventions implemented.
● The Parent’s Guide provides parents with specific, practical strategies to use in helping their child be more successful in the home environment.
● The BES-3:S Quick Score computer program converts raw scores to standard and percentile scores and makes the scoring of both the School and Home Version rating forms efficient and convenient.
Complete Kit includes: BES-3:S School Version Technical Manual, BES-3:S School Version Rating Forms (50), BES-3:S Home Version Technical Manual, BES-3:S Home Version Rating Forms (50), Intervention Strategies Documentation Forms (50), Behavior Evaluation Scale: Long Pre-Referral Checklists (50), BES:S Intervention Manual, and Parent’s Guide
